The MIS MS degree at UIS was started in 1986. Since then it has become the largest MIS MS degree program in the State of Illinois with over 150 graduate students enrolled. It is expected that the option to take classes online will double the enrollment of the program in the next several years.
You will be joining an enthusiastic group of hard-working students. Most students work full time, many in MIS related areas, and take one or two classes per semester. Others hold undergraduate degrees in a variety of fields and are working in businesses, health care organizations, government or not-for-profit organizations.
Some students are full-time students and work as Graduate Assistants at the University or in internships at various agencies in Springfield as part of the University’s Graduate Public Service Internship (GPSI) program.
The average age of our students is 33 years, although some are in their early 20’s and some are in their late 50’s. About one-half of our students are in the age range of 25 to 35. Approximately half of the students are women, and 12% are African American.
The MIS program has a good mix of national and international (about 20%) students. International students frequently have MIS experience in their own countries and are given the opportunity to share their experiences and culture with the American students. This global perspective is extremely useful as the MIS program seeks to broaden its coverage of global MIS issues.
After graduation, some students stay with their current employers and move into new areas of responsibility. Others find positions in new organizations. Feedback from employers indicates that they are very pleased with our graduates.
Curriculum: The curriculum is designed to integrate information technology with business and management concepts.
Faculty: Most of the faculty who teach in the MIS program have real-world experience. In addition, all either have, or are pursuing, their doctorate.
UIS has a tradition of offering innovative programs to students at the time and place most convenient for them. The MS degree in MIS offers three options:
The online courses are being developed and taught by the same faculty members who teach the traditional in-class sections of the courses, thereby assuring the quality of the online courses is as good as or better than the traditional in-class instruction.
